The Moulin Rouge in Paris lost its famous red windmill blades overnight and was partially broken off.

The blades of a windmill atop the famous Moulin Rouge dance hall in Paris fell overnight, damaging the building's facade, it was reported on Thursday.

A falling knife ripped off the first three letters “MOU” on the venue's sign, but it was replaced Thursday morning, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported.

No injuries were reported as a result of the attack, the Paris fire department told BFMTV.

It is unclear why the blade came off, but venue management has ruled out “malicious acts”.

Jean-Victor Clerico, director general of the Moulin Rouge, told BFM that the blade will be returned to its original position “soon”.

He added that shows at the famous venue will continue without cancellation.

Located in the Montmartre district of Paris and founded in 1889, Moulin Rouge is one of the most famous cabaret clubs in the world.

The striking red windmill was a fixture of the venue from the beginning, but the original building burned down in 1915. The current windmill was built in his 1920s.

According to the Moulin Rouge website, the venue has survived fires over the years and has undergone renovations to preserve its grandeur.

The venue hosted the first performance of the French Cancan, the most famous dance featuring energetic moves and high kicks.

The Moulin Rouge is also depicted in the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the French artist who immortalized the world of cabaret clubs during their heyday.

The musical drama “Moulin Rouge!” aired in 2001. According to the venue's website, the production starring Nicole Kidman was inspired by the venue's bohemian culture and hedonistic lifestyle.
