Underrated French city breaks that are much more affordable than Paris | Travel News | Travel

Have you visited Paris? If you're looking for another city getaway in France, why not take a trip to one of the country's most underrated destinations, Lille?

Located in northern France and the region's largest city, Lille is often overlooked by British tourists.

But this vibrant city is just an hour and a half from London by train, making it a great destination for Brits looking for a weekend getaway.

Eurostar tickets can be purchased for less than £80 return, making it a much cheaper weekend destination than Paris.

So what should you do with reels?

The top-rated tourist attraction in Lille on TripAdvisor is Vieux Lille, the city's old town and perhaps the most beautiful area.

One tourist wrote: “Very fun to walk around. Lots of independent and quirky shops and places to stop for a drink.”

The city's impressive Place du Grand Place is a great place for people-watching and sometimes hosts dance classes in the summer.

Lille's Palais des Beaux-Arts is one of France's most acclaimed museums, with works by Donatello and Goya.

A visitor writes: “This is a beautiful museum. The building is old and magnificent. There are also many beautiful pieces of art from old Egypt and Roman times.”

For a more whimsical art experience, head to La Piscine Museum just outside Roubaix to see the stunning works housed in what was once an Art Deco swimming pool.

The northern French city has some local cuisine worth trying. La Tarte aux Maroilles is a flavorful quiche made with crème fraîche, butter, salt, pepper, and eggs.

For dessert, choose Gaufres à la Verjoise, a sugar waffle with a sweet filling sold throughout Lille.

Find cheap train tickets to Lille on Omio or search for discounted prices on Rail Europe. The best prices are usually found during the week.
